Fillers
A variety of fillers can be used in different regions of the face to replace lost volume due to aging, smooth out wrinkles, and add contour and volume to optimize facial appearance. Most fillers are derived from hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance in the extracellular matrix. Treatment characteristics of HA-based fillers can vary significantly from one another due to molecular differences, such as particulate size and cross-linking features. Calcium hydroxlapatite (used in Radiesse) is what makes up bone and is formulated into suspended microspheres when used as a filler. Fillers are used on-label for indications that are FDA approved and off-label for indications that do not have FDA approval but are commonly performed throughout the medical aesthetics community.
